As Baltic Pro Box Promotions keeps on the fight for Uganda’s boxing tradition, we take this time to recognize the names of the pearl of Africa’s boxing heroes/fighters. These are the silent warriors that have flown the Uganda flag and carried their people to the forefront of the World.
We remember Tom Kawere and Eridad Mukwanga. They were followed by Leo Rwabogo who brought a silver medal in the Munich Olympics in 1972 and later by John Mugabi in 1980 at the Moscow Olympics.
Ayub Kalule won the WBA light middleweight title in 1979, Boza Edwards won WBC World lightweight title in 1981 , John Mugabi WBC light Middlewight champion in 1989, Kassim Ouma IBF world light middleweight Champion in 2004, Godfrey Nyakana ,WBF Super welterweight champion , Justin Juuko, WBC International super featherweight Champion. The list goes on from champions to great contenders like Peter Okhello, Samuel Rukundo, Peter Semo, Jackson Asiku.
The kick-boxers include Moses Golola, Ronald Mugula, Umar Semata etc.
While most Uganda would regard soccer as the national sport for the country, but boxers have undoubtedly put the country’s name on the map of international sports.
It is with this backdrop that Baltic Pro Box Promotions came up with a noble idea of honoring these great fighters both boxers and kick-boxers in the first FIGHTER AWARDS EVENT, which took place at HOTEL AFRICA on 27th February, 2015.
